Partner event opportunity: Stewardship in Action on Santa Clara Pueblo lands

Are you interested in learning about tribally led post-fire restoration of slopes, trees, and riparian areas in north-central New Mexico?

The Natural Areas Association (NAA) is hosting a Stewardship in Action Field Workshop in Espanola, on the lands of the Santa Clara Pueblo, September 26 - 28, 2023. Rising from Ashes: A Tribe’s Nature-based Approach to Watershed Restoration will highlight an innovative and iconic case study in public and private collaboration on sovereign tribal lands following a series of catastrophic wildfires. By collaborating with federal agencies and other partners to incorporate indigenous knowledge and values into the recovery planning process, the Santa Clara Pueblo is working to achieve long-term, sustainable resiliency of the watershed. Learn more about the tribe’s journey

The purpose of this Stewardship in Action Field Workshop is to share what was learned by the Santa Clara Pueblo and their many partners and to engage land and water management practitioners from tribal nations, federal and state agencies, and nonprofit organizations from around the continent to exchange information and leverage success to benefit local communities.

The agenda features both indoor presentations and field experiences. Sessions will explore:

  • public and private collaboration on sovereign tribal lands,

  • process-based restoration and watershed resilience,

  • forestry and fire management,

  • sediment stabilization,

  • native plant restoration,

  • indigenous knowledge,

  • nature-based solutions, and

  • preparing for future climate impacts by working together.

NAA’s field workshops are small by design to provide ample opportunity for peer-to-peer sharing. While the experience will be “priceless,” registration for this three-day workshop, including transportation to field sites, breakfast & lunch each day, a networking reception, and supplemental resources, is $329 per person. Visit the webpage to view the agenda and event details. Scholarships are available.

Participation is first come, first served - and capacity is limited. Interested participants should register or email mmcgintyklos@naturalareas.org to express interest and temporarily reserve a spot.

This event is not affiliated with or being hosted or facilitated by the Zuni Mountains Collaborative.

Update - Wetland Restoration Observation Opportunity!

  • Google Calendar ICS

Join the Forest Service and partners for a unique Observation opportunity!

A green and clumpy wetland in the foreground with pine trees and three figures standing in the distance.

A photo of the damaged Shush Kin fen. Hoofprints and trampled vegetation are visible.

Click on the image to view a brief presentation explaining what a histosol fen is and how the District is working to protect this one.

Located at the headwaters of Bluewater Creek is a histosol fen (a unique feature occurring in wet areas where the soil is saturated year-round) in need of restoration. Overgrazing, trampling, and compaction have denigrated the condition of Shush Kin fen, while fences in need of repair have reduced the ability of the nearby grazing permittee to restrict the movement of cattle in the area.

The Mt. Taylor Ranger District and Bat Conservation International are working together to protect Shush Kin fen and restore the form and function of this wetland while also creating wildlife habitat. Interested individuals are invited to observe the team building a pipe fence around the fen during the week of June 26-30.

The Forest Service has worked to restore three nearby springs - which feed into Bluewater Creek - by installing wire fencing. Beaver dam analogues and erosion control dams will also be installed in the future to stabilize stream banks.

This project is being carried out in partnership with New Mexico Game & Fish, Bat Conservation International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, NM EMNRD - Forestry Division, the local grazing permittee, and USFS Range staff and the Region 3 Biologist.

The project is located north of Forest Road 50 next to the Cerna homestead. Click here for directions to the parking area.

All interested individuals should contact Consuelo Lemaire, District Biologist, at consuelo.lemaire@usda.gov to arrange a site visit while work is in progress.

The map pin shows the location of Shush Kin fen. Interested individuals may park just off of Forest Rd 50, 0.9 miles NW of the intersection with Forest Rd 480.

Multi-Party Monitoring Meeting

What: Zuni Mountains Collaborative multi-party monitoring meeting

When: Wednesday March 13th. 10:00 - 12:30

Where: Grants Public Library, 1101 N 1st St., Grants, NM

Calling all Zuni Mountains Collaborative members! Join us in Grants on Wednesday March 13th for a very important multi-party monitoring meeting. Almost 8 years into the project we know there has been a lot of good monitoring and learning happening and we need to share, talk, and learn!

As you all may have heard, the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (CFLR) was re-authorized in the latest Farm Bill. To best position ourselves to pursue a continuation of funding for the Zuni Mountains CFLR in the Puerco Project Area, we will need to review and update the project monitoring plan.

The Zuni CFLR landscape includes multiple land tenures, ecosystems, and wildlife etc. that may be under the jurisdiction of multiple agencies to monitor. If your organization has collected ecological or socio-economic monitoring data (vegetation, water quality, wildlife, employment etc.) in the Zuni CFLR landscape please come prepared to discuss your monitoring plan and any results, analysis, and reports you may have.

Please use the form below to RSVP for the meeting.
