This KUNM radio hour, Let’s Talk, provides an informative discourse on the recent federal injunction halting “timber management actions” on National Forests of the southwestern region. The injunction resulted from a lawsuit by Wildearth Guardians dating back to 2013 that claims the Forest Service failed to monitor the effect of timber management on Mexican Spotted Owl (MSO) habitat. The show hosts the executive director of Wildearth Guardians, John Horning, the director of communication and engagement for the southwestern region of the Forest Service, Shane Martin, and owner of Mount Taylor Millworks and Zuni Mountain Collaborative member, Matt Allen.

Within the show, Shane Martin clarifies the state of firewood cutting restrictions as of November 7th, 2019 and engages in a back-and-forth with John Horning about the type and extent of “timber management actions” in the arid southwest. The MSO habitat areas that the injunction attempts to protect are discussed within the context of wildfire risk reduction, community firewood needs, watershed protection, and economic stabilization of local milling infrastructure.
